Video-based media have been widely recognized for enhancing students’ learning motivation; however, studies focusing on short film project-based learning in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) at the senior high school level remain limited. This study examines the implementation of short film project-based learning to enhance the cognitive engagement of tenth-grade IRE students at SMA Negeri 1 Purwosari. A qualitative case study approach was employed, involving IRE teachers and students participating in the film project as research subjects. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that short film project-based learning effectively enhances students’ cognitive engagement, particularly in terms of value analysis, moral reflection, and ethical decision-making. Through the film production process, students not only develop a deeper conceptual understanding of IRE content but also internalize Islamic values within the context of their digital lives. Therefore, short film project-based learning serves as an effective alternative for addressing challenges related to student engagement in Islamic Religious Education.
